What were some of the biggest trends in IT networking this year? That was the question posed when we sat down with Greg Stemberger, Technical Director of the NextGen Networking Practice at Iron Bow Technologies, for a recent podcast on Techsource. According to Stemberger, he said without a doubt, software-defined networking (SDN) was the most talked about trend in networking this year.
Stemberger said customers are beginning to look at the network differently as they are realizing that it’s much more than a bunch of computer systems and cables linked together. Customers have realized the network allows them to compete more effectively, and it really drives business value so they can act with the speed and agility needed to remain competitive. Stemberger added the “promises of SDN deliver a lot of the same benefits to your network infrastructure,” also giving businesses and agencies “effective utilization so you can deliver applications much more securely and much more effectively to your users that need those applications.”
Customers are now drilling down into what their specific pain points are and how SDN can help meet their needs more efficiently. As Stemberger shares, “We’re seeing real deployments in some of the more critical infrastructures throughout the country,” and the importance of “network optimization” is critical to agency success.
